Back in the summer of 2022, when this show was released, I was fresh off a workshop in Australia, and this conversation with Travis de Vries was inspired by what I learned there.
@travishdevries, the founder of the podcast company @awesomeblackorg, drove home how similar the experiences are between First Nation peoples and those of African descent. And I discovered this all because I heard two people calling each other ‘Blackfella’ at an event held in a Sydney Hip Hop bar called Hustle and Flow. I kid you not. I quickly turned to him and asked what the term meant and WHO could say it.
His answer prompted me to invite him to the show.
This conversation delves right into the root of representation and kinship. How Black Lives Matter Marches resonated with him and First Nations people from Australia and worldwide. The similarities between discrimination and the need to be heard gave me pause, and I believe it will be a real eye-opener for you.
Listen to this conversation to hear a frank approach to identity and creativity from Travis de Vries.

Tune in next week as we take it back to the beginning. Where it alllllll started!! We’re gonna play the very first episode of The Cipher - which was then called ‘De CIPHERED.’ I talked to London-born, Lagos-raised bassist and composer Michael Olatuja. It’s a personal one.
