Hi everybody,

I’m back with a brand new conversation, and believe me when I say it’s come right on time. Donald Trump's inauguration as the 47th president will take place on January 20, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The timing presents challenges for many people, given what he and his campaign have said about the Black community and how those comments have put people in danger. As a result, in the wake of the 2024 elections, many are looking for ways to find peace and create safe spaces.

This week, I’m excited to welcome Josh Rivers to AudioDiaspora. He has been building safe spaces throughout his career. And he’s done this using storytelling as a tool. He’s also the host of the podcast "Busy Being Black,” which explores and celebrates the richness of queer Black lives.

At the start of each show, he asks a simple yet poignant question: "How is your heart?" And I haven’t heard a disappointing answer - so when he joined me, I asked him the same question. Tune in to see what he said. I will say that the conversation that followed was rich, complex - and intimate.

Josh told me about his decision to leave a stable job to pursue his passion, the importance of authenticity over quick monetization, and the strength found in the community. If you’re uncertain about your purpose, this conversation may inspire you to embrace your journey and foster connections.

WELLLL, hello again!

This week, I had a different message for you — then the Wicked movie premiered!

I haven’t seen it yet, but this isn’t a review of the movie—it’s a reflection on the press coverage of the two stars. I’ve been excited to see what Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, two artists who are unafraid to be wholly themselves, will do in this movie.

My excitement was almost derailed when I saw how the British press turned itself into a pretzel to ignore Cynthia and focus almost entirely on Ariana. The usual media suspects, including The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph, were the main culprits. My thoughts started to spiral and went into a doomscroll. Then I saw Cynthia's adorable interview with Cocoa Girl Mag.

WHEW – it brought me back, people! It was a conversation between Cynthia Erivo and a girl who asked her what to do if they didn’t get the part they wanted. And Cynthia’s answer was perfect: What isn’t yours, isn’t yours.

Cynthia talked to many other UK Black women and girls during this press blitz, and I think this was the conversation she wanted to have first. Cynthia knew what was up. Of course, she didn’t want the pain of being ignored. Like many of us in the diaspora, she grew up knowing she didn’t fit, didn’t feel wanted or safe, and could be vilified for speaking up. But none of that distracted her. I genuinely believe she invested her energy and emotions in her primary audience.

Realizing this reminded me of the conversations I’ve had with so many people in my real-life community who have reminded me to stay focused on what’s real and - as far as my work is concerned - my north star. Just after the U.S. election, I got the (to quote Ariana) ‘Yes… and?’ talk from my sister, who reminded me not to let others steal my humanity or joy. In the past year, a good friend, Sharon Brooks, has kept me steady and reminded me that names and labels ain't it - it’s what I bring to the table.’ I’ve just highlighted conversations with two of you – and I thank you all.

Now I’m gonna detour for a second. I mention Sharon by name because I also wanna shout her out. I am in the business of amplifying Black creative innovators, after all, lol! This writer and executive won a CLIO award for her work on the Ally x ESPN Flip the Game campaign. The CLIOS recognizes excellence in advertising, design, and communication. She’s a creative who brings mission, talent, and heart to her work!

Now, back to the topic at hand. I’ve also received messages from listeners and the creators we’re amplifying. Thank you for encouraging me to continue telling and amplifying the stories of Black creatives worldwide who are ignored by the mainstream press. You’re right; our stories are needed now more than ever.

This is a team effort. I’m not stopping at the podcast. How ARE you?!

This week, my vibe is one of gratitude. This week’s guest, Channing Chasten, said some things that just, well, ‘hit different ‘while I was listening to our conversation this week:

“There are times when I get disheartened, but I don't let myself dwell in that place for too long…I still get those feelings, but I like to limit those feelings for a certain amount of time, then move on and figure out how I can use those feelings, or what I’m feeling, to propel myself to be a better version of myself, and use it as motivation to reach that goal.”

Okay - message received! Don’t worry; I’m not shoving anything down. I’m still hono(u)ring my feelings. I’m also using those feelings as…inspiration… if you will.

This week, I’ve considered what AudioDiaspora looks like within the dynamic creator and ‘news influencer’ landscape. Some media analysts have called the 2024 US presidential election “the podcast election” and highlighted how influential podcasters have shaped voters' perceptions of the major candidates.

The AP reported that podcasting—especially appearances on shows like The Joe Rogan Experience—played a crucial role in the President-elect's outreach to men aged 18-29. Vice President Kamala Harris's decision not to appear on Rogan’s show, even though she appeared on Alex Cooper’s ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, continues to spark discussions as I write.

While I don’t think we will understand the true impact of podcasters on this vote for a while, the fact that candidates went on these shows in the first place tells us how influential podcasting has become. But it’s not just podcasters who have a say; the writers and social media folks are also reshaping the landscape. The platforms are ready to capitalize on this shift; this week, Spotify rebranded its podcasting platform from Spotify for Podcasters to Spotify for Creators.

All of this got me thinking again about how famous names continue to get more access to insights, tools, and resources for growth and sustainability than others. I’ve worked in the industry long enough to know this.

I’m using that access gap to reaffirm my resolution: I am committed to providing you with access to insights and information via AudioDiaspora. I’m here to celebrate YOUR wins on the podcast. Let’s emerge from this stronger as creatives and as a community. Together. No one achieves their goals alone. While this platform is my baby, it has evolved and navigated three brand changes because of a brain trust that supported my vision, creatives willing to open up to me, and a production team that helps me get this content to you — and YOU!

Thank you for being part of AudioDiaspora. And, as my elders say, when we face a challenge, ‘we move.’

Hi Fam, 

Right. Before I continue, let me check in with you - especially if you’re in the United States.

You okay? Are you tired too? Everyone I’ve talked to in Ghana, the U.K., and the U.S. this week is weary of America’s Presidential Election. TIIIIRED. But let's not forget that November 6 is around the corner, and it's not just another day. It's a day that will shape our future. While I feel a sense of dread about election day, I want it to be OVER. We need to know what course of action we’re gonna take next.

*Deep breath.*

Now that’s off my chest, let’s return to this week’s happenings. I can’t promise I won’t talk about politics, especially since elections are happening throughout the diaspora. 

Bold, ambitious women across the diaspora who don’t strike me as people who are — to quote U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, “aspiring to be humble” are taking center stage.

We have Vice President Harris, who could become the first Black and Asian woman president of the United States. Then there’s Kemi Badenoch, who is one day away from finding out if she will be the new leader of Britain’s Conservative Party. Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang could become the country’s first female vice president in Ghana if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wins the general elections on December 7. 

These women are breaking barriers in a field where they are severely underrepresented and taking up space in ways that make some people uncomfortable. Part of me loves that they’re challenging the establishment simply by being there - but is being in the room ever enough? Yes, I’m saying that I do have higher expectations of them.

I’d wager that this week’s guest, Shaznay Martin, is pondering a similar question. Her work focuses on creating space for complicated Black women by creating movies from a Black woman’s lens. Films that show characters who take up space, be silly, whimsical, or take up space in a world that wants them to stay small. In a creative way.

Shaznay Martin Is Creating The World She Wants To See Using the Camera and the Pen.

In this week’s episode, we are joined by  Shaznay Martin, a writer and filmmaker who is forging her path in the media world and creating space for Black women on both sides of the camera. As a writer, Shaznay dissects and celebrates movies with complex Black women who take up space. Now, she’s spreading her creative wings by producing her film, inspired by classic Hollywood movies called ‘Noir.’ 

As she shares her journey with Christabel, you’ll learn effective strategies for raising support and funding for independent projects, which is crucial for building a supportive community.

Hi everybody,

I think the universe is ‘having a laugh’ because why is the episode we’re playing one week after I broke my ankle about…sports?!

TOO. SOON!

I jest! It’s fine!

In this week’s episode, I speak with Dr. Shaun M. Anderson, the Knight Chair in Sports, Race, and Media at UNC-Chapel Hill, who is on a mission to share how athletes increasingly use their influence for social change. 

Our conversation comes a week after releasing a new collection of essays called ‘The Power of Basketball: NBA Players, Coaches, and Team Governors on the Fight to Make a Better America.’ The book explores how athletes have confronted anti-Black racism since 2020. One contributor, Washington Wizards guard Malcolm Brogdon, reveals that his mother asked him a critical question during a conversation after the George Floyd protests: “What Now?”

I mean…

I asked myself the same question during the Paris Olympics closing ceremony. As I listened to IOC President Thomas Bach urging the world to live the Olympics'" culture of peace every single day,” I wondered what living a “culture of peace” looked like in the world of sports, where athletes are regularly told to ‘shut up and play’ as they see—or suffer—indignity. 

Dr. Anderson, the author of ‘The Black Athlete Revolt,’ answered that question in this episode of AudioDiaspora. In addition to helping me wrap my head around that question, we reflected on the impact of Colin Kaepernick taking a knee nearly ten years ago (I can’t believe that…) – and Dr. Anderson’s journey from ‘guy with a niche idea’ to thought leader on a critical matter.

Hi everybody,

I’ll try to keep this note short(ish) because, well, a (not very) funny thing happened to me on Monday. I broke my ankle while on a run. I thought it might be a sprain. It turns out it is more than that. So I’m doing something I’ve never done before. I am going to rest, or should I say, I will sit my @$$ down (aka park my brain and slow things down.

How did it happen? Well, I went on a run one day after recovering from the cold that I told you last week had kicked my ass. I was distracted, or, to use the words of a friend who reflected on the story of my fall to me:

‘Hold on – so you were surveying the area, you were literally deciding if you should go left or right…you stopped focusing on your feet and the uneven sidewalk, and that’s when you fell…?’ 

This friend said all this with a solid side eye and raised eyebrow. She trailed off for full effect, and we both chuckled because I was picking up what she put down. I was doing the most, thinking about the goal when I should have kept my eyes on the smaller steps.

That said, it’s all great. As Josh Rivers, the host of 'Busy Being Black,' reminded me today, it takes a community to help you get back on your feet and make you laugh even when you're forced to slow down. I have that, and they’re keeping me honest. 

I'll be sharing some shorter updates while I take some time to recover, but in the meantime, don’t forget to enjoy this week’s AD RoundUp, and look out for next week’s conversation with Dr. Shaun M. Hey AD Fam,

How's everyone doing? I hope you're all doing great. As for me, I'm battling a pesky cold at the moment. 'Tis the season, right? 

That didn’t stop me from my usual ‘nerding’ out over creation and engagement., I stumbled upon some intriguing facts and figures about podcasting this week. First off, my buddies at Spotify dropped these stats: 

In the US, 47% of podcast streams from users aged 18-24 and 45% from those aged 13-17 come from shows originating in other countries.

Then, there's this from a 2023 report by Vox Media called ‘A New Era of Influence’: 

An incredible 80% of listeners polled said their favorite podcast hosts feel like friends to them ‘as they listen to the podcast.’

What I'm taking away from all this is that the world is your oyster, friends. There's an audience out there just waiting to soak in your content and learn about your experiences. 

Take Nikki Fagbemi, a brilliant comedian and actor, for example. She hit the big time after reluctantly opening up and drawing inspiration from her real-life challenges - the things she initially didn't want to define her. By embracing her authenticity, she turned her story into her superpower. Sound familiar?

Like Nikki, every one of you can harness your vulnerability and turn your story into your superpower. It's all about telling your truth in a way only you can.

The impact of Black creators has been felt this week. For some, that has come with a feeling of uneaase. For others, it’s been a moment to celebrate a win. Nevertheless, what each of these creators are demonstrating is the power of following that north star, and the desire to tell the truth as you see it. Keep reading to hear about their inspiring achievements.

Despite the insane pop culture news about a former Hip Hop Mogul that has dominated many headlines (y’all know what I’m talking about,) the world is still paying attention to the threats Haitians and their safe spaces, including Fritznel’s workplace, have been subjected to following former President Trump’s comments. But this team of journalists is undeterred.

I first talked to Dr. Theri Pickens in December 2023. The English Professor and author of the book with the excellent title “Black Madness:: Mad Blackness” (Duke University Press, 2019) is now the *coughs loudly* Charles A. Dana Professor of English and Africana. And as if getting a promotion wasn’t enough, she’s also got a book coming out in the new year from Duke University Press. That also has a great title: “What Had Happened Was.”
